William Harvey () was a British physician and natural historian known for his contributions to human anatomy and physiology. His greatest contribution was to correctly describe the functioning of blood circulation in the body, as well as the properties of blood.
Known to many as the father of cardiology, his work on the circulatory system called Exercitatio Anatomica de Motu Cordis et Sanguinis in Animalibus it was published in in Frankfurt (Germany). The chosen place was not random, having a reason that we will see later.
With his discovery, Harvey confirmed some ideas proposed by the scientist Ren Descartes in his work Description of the human body years before. Miguel Servet, Mateo Realdo Colombo or Jacques Dubois also approached the theory of the English scientist in their writings, but with unfinished nuances.
When Harvey demonstrated with his “Motu Cordis” how blood circulated, he banished the previous theory, which belonged to Galen and which had persisted for years.

William Harvey (April 1, – June 3, ) was an Englishphysician and natural historian who is most well-known for elucidating the circulation of blood. Harvey also made discoveries in areas of comparative anatomy and physiology, pioneering modern embryology and addressing issues of the generation of viviparous and viviparous animals. He has been called the "father of modern physiology," and the "founder of modern experimental physiology" (because his work was based on experiments on animals).
Harvey's groundbreaking work on blood circulation overturned centuries of inaccurate speculation in the Western world. He studied at Kings School Cambridge, before travelling to Cambridge where he studied at Gonville and Caius College. After matriculating with a BA, he travelled to Europe and began studying at the University of Padua in Italy. In Padua, Harvey was deemed to be an excellent student. He studied under Hieronymus Fabricius who was a leading authority on anatomy and had created the first public theatre for anatomical dissections. At the same time that Harvey studied, Galileo was a tutor, and the two may have met. Harvey was influenced by the Scientific Renaissance ideas of Galileo and others.
Returning from Italy, he obtained a degree of medicine from the University of Cambridge, before establishing himself in London as a member of the Royal College of Physicians. In he married Elizabeth Browne, daughter of Elizabeth Is physician and this gave Harvey greater social prestige. The couple had no children.

William Harvey was born in Folkestone, Kent on 1 April His father was a merchant. Harvey was educated at King's College, Canterbury and then at Cambridge University. He then studied medicine at the University of Padua in Italy, where the scientist and surgeon Hieronymus Fabricius tutored him.
Fabricius, who was fascinated by anatomy, recognised that the veins in the human body had one-way valves, but was puzzled as to their function. It was Harvey who took the foundation of Fabricius's teaching, and went on to solve the riddle of what part the valves played in the circulation of blood through the body.
On his return from Italy in , Harvey established himself as a physician.
