As if an itinerant geographer, Jayce Salloum observes the world and creates a subjective archive of images that he either gleans or produces.

He tends to go only where he is invited or where there is an intrinsic affinity, his projects being rooted in an intimate engagement with place. A grandson of Syrian immigrants he was born and raised on Sylix (Okanagan) territory in Kelowna, BC. After 22 years living and working in San Francisco, Banff, Toronto, San Diego, Beirut, and New York he has been based on the unceded Xwmetskwíyem/xʷməθkʷey̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh/sqʷx̌ʷoʔməx (Squamish) + Selíl̓witulh/səíl̓wətaʔł (Tsleil-Waututh) land of ‘Vancouver’ for 23 years. His videotapes, photographs, installations, and other cultural projects engage the personal/subjective, reconfiguring notions of identity, community, history, boundaries, exile, (trans/inter/intra)nationalism and resistance. His work has involved production and facilitation in many locales including Afghanistan, Lebanon, Palestine, the former Yugoslavia, Europa, San Francisco, San Diego, New York, Central Ame
The artist about his work
Untitled is a video installation extending and building relationships, constructing an environment where spheres of histories are situated in a web of connectivity It is a sculptural space that presents the effect of walking into a videotape itself, a stillness, a silence of moving images juxtaposed, flowing and colliding, waves of scan lines, an active meditativeness picturing the interstitial. Listening, headphones close off exterior sound, linking to the audio feed, the voice speaking from the image before you. It fixes the space and frames it, the act of witnessing becomes confessional, a direct feed that demands its own time. Each part is projected onto its own image area or emanating from a monitor. It is an atmosphere of visual collusion, collaboration, contextualisation, critical interference, and mutual existence The illuminations play off each other, creating an imagistic and aural experience of the physical/visceral and the underlying subjectivities experienced through the body, as crisis, nation, and metaphor, or in transition and shift, and in the recounting or enunciatory nature of the interstitial site.

As if an itinerant geographer of conflicted territories (most everywhere), Salloum observes the world and creates/collects images/texts to re-make meaning from or comment on. Since arriving here—by no means of his own volition—he tries to go only where he is invited or where there is an intrinsic affinity, his projects being rooted in an intimate engagement with place. A grandson of Syrian or Lebanese immigrants, he was born and raised on others’ land, the Sylix (Okanagan) territory. After 22 years living and working elsewhere, he planted himself on the unceded stolen lands of the xʷməθkʷey̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh and səíl̓wətaʔł. Recognizing and acting on this is an everyday practice, but let’s face it, he could do a lot more. In/out of this context not that it really matters, Salloum has lectured and published pervasively and exhibited peripatetically at the widest range of local and international venues possible and most improbable, from the smallest unnamed storefronts in his downtown eastside Vancouver neighbourhood to institutions such as the Musée du Louvre, Museum of Modern Art, Guggenheim Museum, Centre Georges Po
