Yes!” The small snowy town of Lake Placid, New York, served as the backdrop for what Sports Illustrated called the greatest sports moment of the 20th century. A young left-winger named Mark Johnson scored two goals against the Soviet Union to propel Team USA to the gold medal game against Finland.
Of the 20 players who won a gold medal at the Winter Olympics, 13 of them moved on to play in the NHL. Johnson played with five franchises during his year career, which ended with the New Jersey Devils. However, the 5-foot-9 forwards career began with their division rival, the Pittsburgh Penguins.

As a University of Wisconsin freshman, Mark Johnson led the Badgers to the NCAA Championship. Johnson, UW hockey's second all-time leading scorer, lead the "Miracle On Ice" U.S. Olympic Team in scoring with his game-winning goal won the gold medal. Johnson had an year NHL career that included stops with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Minnesota North Stars, Hartford Whalers, St. Louis Blues and New Jersey Devils. Johnson captained and made an all-star game appearance while with the Whalers. Following a stellar pro career, Johnson, like his father Hall of Fame inductee Bob Johnson, started a successful coaching career. A two-time first-team All-American and the WCHA Most Valuable Player, Johnson is a charter member of the National W Club Hall of Fame, a inductee into the International Ice Hockey Federation Hall of Fame and in was selected as one of the WCHA's "Top 50 Players in 50 Years."
In the film, Miracle, Kurt Russell, who plays Herb Brooks, talked about the best moment of the Olympics experience, and he refers to the team gathering together on the podium saying, “Well it was here. The sight of twenty young men with such differing backgrounds, now standing as one. Young men willing to sacrifice so much of themselves all for an unknown.”
