Grace's Guide To British Industrial History

Lieut.-Colonel Mervyn Joseph Pius O'Gorman () was one of the greatest British aeronautical designers. During World War I he was an aeronautical research designer at the Royal Aircraft Factory in Farnborough, testing out new inventions in the field.

Born in Ireland, Mervyn O'Gorman (or 'O.G.' as he was affectionately known) is best known as one of the greatest British aeronautical engineers.

He was also a motoring pioneer, writing O'Gorman's Motoring Pocket Book in , and was actively involved in the Royal Automobile Club (RAC), becoming its vice-president. He also later played a key role in the introduction of the Highway Code.

Last week a follower on twitter sent me an intriguing message &#; &#;here&#;s something to pass on to all your Bevan clan&#; - he wrote with a link to a feature in a national daily newspaper.

The model in an enigmatic set of photographs taken by Mervyn O'Gorman, thought to be the earliest examples of colour photography, had been identified. Previously known only as Christina it was thought that the young girl in the red bathing suit was O'Gorman's daughter.

However, Christina's true identity came to light when Stephen Riddle, a retired technician, contacted Colin Harding, curator at the National Media Museum with a set of stereoscopic slides by O&#;Gorman.

The 16 year old model was revealed to be Christina Elizabeth Frances Bevan, the elder daughter of Edwyn Robert Bevan, a classical scholar, archaeologist and philosopher, and his wife, the Honourable Mary Waldegrave.

Mervyn O&#;Gorman trained first as an electrical engineer before becoming an aircraft engineer and Superintendent of the Royal Aircraft Factory but in his spare time he enjoyed taking photographs and was a pioneer of the Autochrome process.

Mervyn O’Gorman&#;s ‘Christina’: How the girl in red from a photo became a social media starlet

More than years after they were taken, these images of a teenage girl at Lulworth Cove have taken Twitter and Instagram by storm.

The girl in question is Christina, and the images—on show in our Drawn by Light exhibition until 21 June —have been doing the rounds on social media and in the world’s press. The Daily Mail called her ‘the original lady in red’. The Daily Mirror suggested that the images look so contemporary we should be using the hashtag #tinaonthebeach. And El Pais dubbed Christina ‘Una ‘pin-up’ de Flickr del siglo XX’—a Flickr pin-up for the 20th century.

Who was Christina?

The mystery of Christina’s identity has brought a lot of attention to the photographs, leading a major genealogy research organisation to delve into the archives to find out more.

In the most recent twist, a man from Chertsey spotted Christina in his copy of the Daily Mail and has contacted us to let us know that he possesses stereoscopic slides showing Christina and the photographer Mervyn O’Gorman on their way to the ‘shoot’. Curator Colin Harding will be collecting these slide
