LOS ANGELES – Still a kid in when Trixter scored a big hit with “Give It To Me Good,” guitarist Steve Brown parlayed his young success like a true master.
The highlight was probably subbing in with Def Leppard a couple of times through the years, but Brown never turned his back on P.J. Farley, Pete Loran and the rest of Trixter. Nearly 40 years since they first started, they&#;re doing an expansive summer tour, and in the interim Brown has also succeeded as a producer and co-writer with Ace Frehley in addition to founding his own SBS Guitars company.
Brown is the longshot who made it despite signing with MCA back in the day – the label failed just about everyone else who not named Tom Petty – and in this inspiring, rare interview, you can feel Brown&#;s optimism and enthusiasm even though he&#;ll be playing for crowds of maybe instead of 50, like Def Leppard.

Since becoming aforce on the New Jersey rock circuit at age 12, Steve Brown has made guitar playing the center of his life. His glam-metal group Trixter enjoyed success through the s, culminating in their hit Give It to Me Good. Along the way, Brown shared stages with some of that era’s biggest acts and earned accolades from fellow guitarists, Eddie Van Halen among them.
Since then, Brown has performed on Broadway in the hit musical Rock of Ages and played with former Styx vocalist Dennis DeYoung and ex-Rainbow and Deep Purple singer Joe Lynn Turner. He’s also had the special distinction of being the only guitarist to sub for both Phil Collen and Vivian Campbell onstage with Def Leppard. Here he tells us, in his own words, about working with Ace Frehley on 10, Volts.

Today, he’s ever aware of often elusive components of the music world he revolves around, and he’s intent on maintaining a diverse and growing range of skills to weather even the harshest musical storms. At the same time, Brown is hardly guarded or cynical. He’s a whirlwind of energy, excitement and optimism that enable him to juggle all of his roles, seemingly without effort.

Reflecting on the possibility of a reunion for the band&#;s classic lineup, Brown expressed:
&#;Pete Loran is a brother. We talk all the time, and everything&#;s cool there. I just think that Pete&#;s — look, he&#;s always welcome. He can come out whenever he wants. He&#;s always welcome to come on stage and play with me and Trixter bassist P.J. Farley.
We&#;ve gotten offers over the past couple of years, and we&#;ve presented it, &#;Hey, we want the band,&#; and it just doesn&#;t work out. And there&#;s nothing I can say more about it other than the fact that, with Mark &#;Gus&#; Scott, sadly, that&#;s a problem that&#;ll never be repaired in my mind.&#;
He further commented on Scott&#;s abilities behind the kit:
&#;So that you&#;re never gonna see the original Trixter back with the drummer again. But you might see Pete fronting us with a different drummer, which is fine &#;cause that guy was an adequate drummer at best anyway.&#;
