On Welcome to Earth, Will Smith is a surprisingly likeable and adept guide to the natural world
Is Will Smith the new David Attenborough? Or he is simply another celebrity being put through the wringer for our entertainment?
The new Disney+ nature series Welcome to Earth contained elements of both as the likeable A-lister began by descending 3, feet to the bottom of the ocean – having first informed us that he’s scared of water.
“My grandmother used to say that all the best things in life are lived on the other side of fear,” he said, introducing what is obviously going to be a key component of the six-part series in which the actor explores geographical extremes, including active volcanos and nocturnal lion safaris.
Director Darren Aronofsky is best known for psychological horror movies like Black Swan, and Smith’s descent into the inky darkness was accompanied by a nerve-jangling soundtrack.
Smith was joined by a reassuringly experienced marine biologist aptly named Dr Diva Amon. Not that she was above putting the creeps on Smith. “Did you hear that clunk?” she asked him at one point. “That’s the sphere telling us we’re at our limits”.

After a year hiatus, Will Smith is back with new music. The actor and rapper is set to release his upcoming studio album, Based on a True Story, on March Smith announced the release date on Instagram, writing, “Been working on this project for a minute and I’m itchin’ to get it out to y’all.”
