Alfredo Ramos Martínez
It was in Brittany that Ramos Martínez began to paint and draw on newspapers, a medium he also used during his years in California. When he discovered he had run out of drawing paper, he asked the innkeeper at the place he was staying for a weekend if they had any suitable paper for drawing. The gentleman offered plenty of discarded newspapers.
In , Ramos Martínez began participating in the annual Salon d'Automne in Paris, perhaps the most important of all salons at that time. Within a year of his first exhibition there, his painting "Le Printemps" received the gold medal. However, after this great recognition, Hearst decided to discontinue her monthly support, and Ramos Martínez began the struggle to make a living as an artist. Ramos Martínez presented his work in various galleries in Paris. One of the prominent art critics of the time, Camille Mauclair, wrote that Ramos Martínez's work was in the same class as the finest Impressionist landscapes exhibited in Paris. While sales of his artwork were ongoing, and Ramos Martínez had achieved a certain degree of comfort as a "Parisian," in , he felt a strong desire to return to Mexico.

Alfredo Martinez is best known for his modern Mexican paintings and murals. His work did not directly reflect traditional Mexican art nor did it embrace the European modernist movements of the time, but rather his unique style was based on his heritage and his thorough academic background.

Through countless golden afternoons and well into silvery moonlit evenings, Alfredo Ramos Martinez would wander through Coyoacan, gazing up at its bell towers, strolling through its plazas and narrow streets, all the while taking in the geometry of the huge stones of the walls, the adobe walls, and the rounded cobblestones. After making numerous quick sketches, he would return home to transform his studies into watercolor compositions. This sixteenth century Coyoacan, with its churches and open markets of fruit and flower stalls can be seen in Ramos Martinez’s early works.
Ramos’ friend, the Mexican poet, painter and translator, José Juan Tablada contended years later in his memoir, La Feria de la Vida (“The Festival of Life,” ) that these watercolors were among the first artistic manifestations of a revolutionary art, originating as they did, in the observations of “things,” the phenomena of everyday life. Tablada states that it was American tourists who first recognized the beauty and value of Ramos’ surprisingly extraordinary depictions of seemingly ordinar
Alfredo Ramos Martínez
Alfredo Ramos Martínez was a painter, muralist, and educator, who lived and worked in Mexico, Paris, and Los Angeles. Considered by many to be the 'Father of Mexican Modernism', Ramos Martínez is best known for his serene and empathetic paintings of traditional Mexican people and scenes. As the renowned Nicaraguan poet Rubén Darío wrote, "Ramos Martínez is one of those who paints poems; he does not copy, he interprets; he understands how to express the sorrow of the fisherman and the melancholy of the village."
Ramos Martínez was born in in Monterrey, Nuevo León, the ninth child of Jacobo Ramos and his wife Luisa Martínez. His father was a successful merchant trading in jewelry, fine fabrics, silver, embroidered suits and hand-woven sarapes from Saltillo. All members of the Ramos Martínez family were involved with their father's business and it was expected that the artist, too, would one day join the ranks of "honorable merchant". However, Ramos Martínez's evident talent and instincts propelled him towards a career in the arts; a choice that his family ultimately supported.
