John Kelly has been described variously as an awkward bugger (Fergal Gaynor, ) and a free radical (Guangzhou Triennale, ), and whilst these observations are no doubt true his awkward radical behaviour leads to some interesting results.
John Kelly was born in His father, from Cork, and mother from Bristol, the family immigrated to Australia the same year. Due to his birth, heritage and circumstance John now holds three passports and therefore is an Englishman, an Australian and an Irishman. Kelly has lived in all three countries and for the past decade has resided in west Cork, Ireland. Although he has exhibited in Ireland before, Sticks and Stones might be regarded as his first exhibition as an Irish artist.
In Kelly obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Visual Arts Painting) from RMIT University, Melbourne, where he also completed his Masters of Arts in As a winner of the Anne & Gordon Samstag International Visual Arts Scholarship, he travelled to London to study as an Affiliate Student at the Slade School of Art from to In the UK he exhibited regularly with the prestigious Piccadilly Galleries in Cork Street, London and then Agnews Gallery, and has continued to do so with
John Melville Kelly, painter and printmaker, was born in Oakland, California in Raised on a ranch outside of Phoenix, Arizona, Kelly decided to return to the Bay Area s a young adult to pursue an education in art and design. He studied at the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art, the Partington Art School, and with artist Eric Spencer Mackey and the Telegraph Hill artists' colony. Kelly's work as a freelance artist came on the heels of a fourteen-year career as an illustrator and graphic designer for the San Francisco Examiner. In Town and Country Homes, Inc., offered Kelly an opportunity to illustrate Hawaiian real estate locations for prospective residents. It was meant to last a year, but Kelly and his wife, sculptor Kate Kelly, ended up staying.
It was Kate's pursuit of printmaking, under the tutelage of Huc-Mazelet Luquiens, that sparked John's own interest in the decidedly different artistic medium. John began pursuing etching with great interest, eventually working almost exclusively in drypoint and then aquatint. Born in Scotland into a seafaring family in , Kelly immigrated to Canada as a young boy. His experiences as a Merchant marine seaman sailing off the coasts of Canada and Alaska would later be the subject of his artwork. Displaying a precocious and prodigious talent, Kelly advanced quickly to study at the Art Center College of Design in the Los Angeles area.
In addition, Kelly studied under and collaborated with Lynton Kisteler to produce unique maritime works that now reside at the Smithsonian Museum. Other famous series by Kelly include the Cargo & Steamship Series and the Sea Odyssey series. Newer series include Tropical Dreams, San Francisco cityscapes and the upcoming Homage to William Turner, saluting the beloved and influential landscape painter. His collections have reached over 75, throughout the world.

There is an obsessiveness about the art of John Kelly. It turns again and again on certain ideas, moments, encounters, with the concentration and concern for detail of those naive painters and lone builders of dream palaces beloved of the Surrealists: the Douanier Rousseaus and Ferdinand De Chevals. Not that Kelly's paintings or sculptures can be described as 'naive': there is nothing amateur or isolated about his practice. It is an educated offshoot of the Australian modern tradition, at ease in the global art scene, as the success of his Cow up a Tree at the Parisian Les Champs de la Sculpture () and international exhibition-list attest. But there is a continuity with the demotic art of the customs officers and postmen all the same.
There are three chief moments on which this art pivots. It constantly harks back to what might be called the 'heroic age' of Australian modernism – the forties, a period characterised by the radical gesture of Sidney Nolan's painting Boy and the Moon, the furore of the Ern Malley affair and the absurdist meeting of government and art of Dobell's cows.
