Altiero Spinelli was an unusual politician: first a young militant Communist, then a prophet of Europes federal unity during the Resistance and after World War II. A spirited fighter, almost always moving against the flow, he is increasingly perceived as one of the most important European figures of the 20th century. Spinelli has left plenty of material concerning his private and public life: memoirs, diaries (all published by Il Mulino), and a vast archive. On the basis of these sources and lengthy research in European and American archives, the author of this volume supplies a comprehensive portrait of Spinellis life and political activity, which a special emphasis on his decades-long federalist commitment and work in European institutions. Detailed and passionate, this biography gives readers direct access to an extraordinary personal and political experience and testifies to its significance and appeal.

Spinelli: who was he?
Few of the younger MEPs or staff in the European Parliament seem aware of the person after whom the main parliamentary building is named: Altiero Spinelli.
I was privileged to attend as a special guest last Monday, the premiere of a film on the life of Spinelli – not a documentary but a historical drama on his life, the 16 years he spent in Mussolini’s prisons and internment camp on the island of Ventotene. Members of Spinelli’s family, people who worked closely with him, the actors, film director, and the head of Italian television RAI were there. The film itself was very moving and well acted. It would be nice if it were not only shown on Italian television, but also in other countries.
It’s been 28 years since Altiero Spinelli passed away, at which time I wrote a tribute to him, as I had the privilege of working with him from to
An extract of the article can be read below. I hope it will enable a new generation in the Parliament to understand the significance of the man behind the name of the building in which we work.
Spinelli was one of those men whose actions were directed towards his ideas. Brash but persuasive, willing to compromise but not to
Altiero Spinelli fought tirelessly for a federal European Union
The Altiero Spinelli building, which was completed in , is now a familiar Brussels landmark. But how much do you really know about the man who gave his name to one of the main Parliament buildings in this European capital? For example, did you know that the young Altiero Spinelli spent ten years in prison and a further six long years in confinement? If not, it's time to read up about him here
The Ventotene Manifesto
Altiero Spinelli was born on 31 August in Rome into a family of socialists. He was drawn to politics at an early age and joined the Italian Communist Party. This led to his arrest in June on charges carrying a jail sentence of 16 years and eight months. He used his time in prison to study politics in depth. Disillusioned with the party for which he had been arrested and abhorring Stalinist totalitarianism, he turned his back on his previous affiliations to espouse the federalist cause.
It was while he was under house arrest on the small island of Ventotene located in the Tyrrhenian Sea, that
