There is always time for change. Who would've thought that a little kid from the country who bounced around between foster homes, detention centers, and jails would have done anything with his life? Based on his history, we might have guessed that Malcolm X lived a life of crime until he died in a gunfight. But that didn't happen. He changed.
You can probably think of a million things that you want to change in your life. Some of them probably seem impossible. But that's okay. If The Autobiography of Malcolm X teaches us anything, it's that there is time for you to change your life as long as you're not dead. If this little kid from Nebraska could do it, then so can you.

Nightmare
- The Ku Klux Klan is on Malcolm's doorstep before he's even born. They show up when Malcolm's mom is pregnant with him, and threaten to harm his father for spreading the Pan-African message of Marcus Garvey. Luckily for him, he's in Milwaukee, so the Ku Klux Klan just rides away.
- When Malcolm's dad gets back, he's pissed. As soon as Malcolm is born, the family moves to Milwaukee. They move again to Michigan, but all is not well. When Malcolm is just four years old the Black Legion burns down his family home.

Chapter 1 Summary
Malcolm X's story opens with a troubling story about how the Ku Klux Klan visited his home while his mother was pregnant with him. From here, Malcolm goes on to tell the story of his childhood in a chapter called "Nightmare."
One of eight children, Malcolm grew up in poverty, moving a number of times before his family settled in Michigan. His father, a dark man, was a freelance Baptist preacher who spread the word of Marcus Garvey, a man who stressed the need of Negroes to become free of the white man (Malcolm's words). His mother, who was from the West Indies, was very light skinned; Malcolm inherited lighter skin from his mother and he realized from a young age that his parents treated him differently as a result. Biography
Dr. Herbert Kroemer is a true pioneer in the field of physics and in the technology of semiconductors and semiconductor devices. His work in heterostructure-based transistors has furthered the development of the cell phone and other wireless communications technologies.
When Dr. Kroemer applied the heterostructure principle to semiconductor lasers, it allowed them to operate continuously at room temperature. This advance paved the way for the development of the semiconductor lasers used in CD players, fiber optics and other applications. It also is central to non-laser light-emitting diodes (LEDs), now found in most new U.S. traffic signals. His Nobel Prize winning work was published in a paper, "A Proposed Class of Heterojunction Injection Lasers," in the Proceedings of the IEEE.
Dr. Kroemer originated the concept of the heterostructure bipolar transistor in the mids while with RCA Laboratories in Princeton, NJ.
