Maurice Béjart is born in Marseille on January 1st, He begins his dance career in Vichy in , continues with Janine Charrat, Roland Petit and especially in London, as part of the International Ballet. During a tour in Sweden with the Cullberg Ballet (), he discovers the potential of choreographic expressionism. A Swedish film project confronts him for the first time with Stravinsky, but back in Paris, he gathers choreographic experience with compositions by Chopin and the support of the critic Jean Laurent. From now on the dancer is doubled by a choreographer.
In he confirms his thinking outside the box with the choreography of Symphonie pour un homme seul, performed by his company Ballets de l'Etoile. Noticed by Maurice Huisman, the new director of the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie, he creates a triumphant Sacre du printemps ().

Pour prendre des forces et sur les conseils d'un médecin, il suit des cours de danse. Son rêve est de devenir toréro. Il fait des études universitaires et obtient une licence de philosophie. Après avoir assisté à un récital de Serge Lifar (très grand danseur, chorégraphe et pédagogue russe), il prend la décision de se consacrer totalement à la danse.
À quatorze ans, il entre à l'Opéra de Paris. Il est formé avec les danseuses Janine Charrat et Yvette Chauviré (qui sera danseuse étoile de l'Opéra de Paris) puis, à partir de avec Roland Petit. En , Maurice Béjart crée son premier ballet "L'Inconnu" à Stockholm.
