I was standing on patrol when a driver yelled ‘You black ****’ at me it was a fellow copper in a panda car: NORWELL ROBERTS - the first ever black policeman in the Met - tells his harrowing but ultimately uplifting story
The reporting sergeant at Bow Street Police Station did not mince his words. ‘Look, you n****r,’ he snarled. ‘I’ll see to it that you won’t finish your probation.’ To say I was shocked would be an understatement. It was my first day with the Metropolitan Police and I’d been so proud and excited. Not any more.
All around me the other officers in the room looked away. Nobody stuck up for me – in fact, I thought I could see some of them smirking behind their hands.
I’d known that being London’s first black police officer was not going to be easy. But nothing had prepared me for this.
What you are about to read is completely true. My aim isn’t to make people feel sorry for me. All I want is to describe how things were: to take you back to the bad old days of the Sixties and Seventies, so that we can learn from them.
I often find myself disagreeing with people who say Britain is as racist as ever. Anyone who says that has no idea how bad it was to live as a blac
Michael Jordan: A Biography
Michael Jordan's Life Before He Became an NBA Star
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Michael Jordan spent his early years in a rollicking house in rural North Carolina, surrounded by generations of family that stretched back to his great-grandfather.
Jordan's stable home life remained consistent even after his immediate family moved to the city of Wilmington in the late s, with parents James and Deloris establishing high academic standards and firm ground rules to keep their five children out of trouble.
It was James, a maintenance worker turned supervisor at General Electric, who introduced Jordan to his first athletic love, baseball and built a basketball court in the backyard (and also reportedly inspired Jordan's notorious tongue wag with his own facial contortions).
However, companions recall Deloris, a bank teller, as the more forceful presence of his parents. Her strong will would later be reflected in her son's renowned drive to succeed.
His rivalry with his brother fueled Jordan's desire to be the better player
If the backyard court provided the canvas for Jordan to develop his basketball genius, then it was the presence of its other regular occupant that unleashe
UKs first black police officer says racism still isnt taken seriously in Met
Britain’s first black police officer has spoken about the loneliness he felt as he faced untold racism and abuse in the force, and still feels like it still isn’t taken seriously.
Norwell Roberts, 77, was an officer for 30 years, and was the first post-war black police officer in the Metropolitan Police.
He went on to achieve one of the highest awards an officer can gain and was given the Queen’s Police Medal (QPM) just a year before he ended his service.
The now retired detective sergeant feels racism is still rife in the police, and that it stems from the very top.
Norwell still finds it difficult now to relive the ‘hatred’ he faced
He told : ‘I’ve really not got over it, at that time there was no such thing as counselling, I would have to counsel myself, and cry after every shift.
‘Reliving it, I often break down, it really wasn’t nice.
‘When you’re going to work and trying to do your job and you’re faced with hatred, how can anyone live like that?
‘Nobody said life was meant to be easy, and you’ve just got to make the most of it, and make a success of it, and I’
