St. Matthew was a first century Galilean, born in Galilee, and was the son of Alpheus. During the Roman occupation that began in 63 BC, Matthew collected taxes from the Hebrew people for Herod, tetrarch of Galilee. His tax office was located in Capernaum. Jews who became rich doing this, were despised and they were considered outcasts.
Jesus called Matthew to be one of the Twelve Disciples. After he was called to come with Jesus, Matthew invited Jesus into his home for a feast. This really upset the Scribes and the Pharisees, criticizing Jesus for eating with tax collectors and sinners. Jesus answered by saying, “I came not to call the righteous, but sinners”. (Mark ) When Matthew is mentioned in the New Testament he is sometimes found paired with Thomas. The New Testament records that as a disciple, he followed Jesus and was one of the witnesses to the Resurrection and the Ascension. Afterwards they withdrew to the “Upper Room”. St. Matthew remained in and about Jerusalem and proclaimed that Jesus was the promised Messiah.

Matthew means &#;gift of God&#; in Hebrew, and he was also called Levi in a few passages in the New Testament. We know that Matthew was one of the writers of the Synoptic Gospels that chronicled much of Jesus’ ministry but just like the other disciples, his name vanished quickly from most Biblical records after Jesus’ death. But thanks to his skills as a writer, the modern Christian can read about Jesus’ life, deeds, and death through the Gospel of Matthew with his unique perspective.

The Apostle Matthew, also known as Saint Matthew and Levi, was one of the twelve disciples of Jesus Christ. He is traditionally regarded as the author of the Gospel of Matthew. When Jesus called Matthew to follow him, he was a tax collector (or “publican”)—one of the most reviled professions in ancient Judaism.
Little is known about this apostle. Aside from a handful of mentions in the gospels, he’s a surprisingly obscure New Testament figure. And despite the fact that the church has long considered him the author of the Gospel of Matthew, little else was ever recorded about him.
While Matthew is honored as a martyr, no one knows for sure where or how he died. Various accounts say he was beheaded, stoned, burned, or stabbed—one even suggests he died of natural causes like John.
There are legends about his ministry, but no substantial records of his role in the early church. Later apocryphal texts emerged claiming to be written by him, and some early church fathers supported these texts, but the works only survive in fragments and quotations, and modern scholarship is divided on their authorship.

I did not grow up in church. But I grew up in a part of the Bible Belt. As such I knew from a young age that Matthew, Mark, Luke and John were names of people who had written stories about Jesus. But who were these men? Today we will consider Matthew. Who was he and why did he write about Jesus?
Matthew, also known as Levi, is listed as one of the 12 disciples in the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and Acts. We know from the narratives that he was a tax collector. But is there more we can learn about Matthew? Does church history tell us anything about this disciple?
Who Was Matthew the Tax Collector?
We are first introduced to Matthew in the ninth chapter of the book bearing his name. There he is identified as “sitting at the tax booth.” In the other gospel accounts he is listed as Levi, the son of Alphaeus. This means that Levi is a Jew. This makes his “sitting at the tax booth” all the more despicable.
