"I do not remember a single day without music," said violin prodigy Brianna Kahane. When she was 2 years old, she recognized a piece of classical music playing in a department store. That's when Brianna's mother realized her daughter had a special ear.
By age 4, Brianna was exhibiting expert fingerwork and a photographic memory, too. Soon she was playing a three-quarter-size instrument made in by Italy's Antonio Gragnani—compliments of Chicago's Stradivari Society.
For the past four years, the Miami native has been honing her craft at Juilliard, under the direction of famed tutors Hyo Kang and I-Hao Lee. She hasn't made it to Carnegie Hall just yet, but she has performed for Itzhak Perlman and Joshua Bell—as well as Bill Clinton, Oprah Winfrey and Ellen DeGeneres.
Her most impressive achievement, though, is helping raise $19 million for charities such as the Make a Wish Foundation, the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center. "I believe music touches all and crosses all boundaries," she said. "It is blind to race as well as religious and political beliefs."
