Juli in Berlin geboren. Seine Mutter war die jüdische Amerikanerin Ruth Goodrich, sein Vater der damalige Generalmusikdirektor der Berliner Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Erich Kleiber.
Der Weg Carlos Kleibers zum mythenumrankten Jahrhundertdirigenten ist kompliziert. Sein Vater Erich Kleiber leitet die Berliner Staatsoper Unter den Linden al
Carlos Kleiber () was an enigma. Few conductors cancelled as many performances as he did, or had such a restrictive repertoire. Yet many music lovers regard him as one of the greatest conductors of all time. He was a perfectionist, but also possessed of a rare lack of self-confidence. He wanted the absolute perfect result, and if he felt that it did not meet his expectations, well, that was enough. Many concert promoters, opera managers and record producers have no doubt agonised over the years over all the missed performances and recordings.
Carlos Kleiber had a lot to live up to. His father, Erich Kleiber, was one of the great conductors of the midth century. Almost as obsessed with the ultimate interpretation as his son. And Kleiber senior did not want his son to follow the same path. Eventually, however, Carlos defied his famous father and began to learn the craft of conducting at lesser-known opera houses in the s.
He almost always used his father’s scores and recordings to prepare his own interpretations of the classics. Slowly but surely, word spread that he was an exceptional talent. Offers began to come in from major opera houses and orchestras such as the Bavarian
Program: Explore the life and recordings of enigmatic conductor Carlos Kleiber
“Carlos has a genius for conducting, but he doesn’t enjoy doing it. He tells me ‘I conduct only when I’m hungry.’ And it’s true. He has a deep-freeze. He fills it up and cooks for himself and when it gets down to a certain level, then he thinks ‘Now I might do a concert.’” Herbert von Karajan
The legend
Austrian conductor Carlos Kleiber is famous for his infrequent but supreme interpretations of a limited repertoire. In life and death, he embodied the romantic, enigmatic, reclusive genius, idolised by his audiences and musicians alike. When he died in , aged 74, the obituaries about his performances were peppered with adjectives like “passionate, spontaneous, incandescent and shattering.”
In a BBC Poll asked conductors including Sir Colin Davis, Gustavo Dudamel and Valery Gergiev to vote for their favourite conductor. Kleiber was named the greatest ahead of Bernstein and Abbado.
So what were the X factors that singled him out for such posthumous glory? Especially since he was as famous for the concerts and recordings he didn’t make (often cancelling for seemingly trivial reasons) as for the
