A Fish Tale
Beck Bravo's story took us back to some of the awkwardness of childhood – the need to fit in, the desire to find friends, and the dread and loneliness of being different. Meanwhile, Daniel dela Cruz's graceful and whimsical figures fit Bravo’s words like hand in glove, and give her characters personality, identity, and even movement.
Each of the Mer had the power to take anything he saw above the water and wish it into becoming part of his own form. And so there were some of them who sported wings, some who sported wheels, and some who sported gadgets, tools, and all sorts of thingamajigs. There even some who had taken it into their heads to wear human faces.
This was an unusual preference sometimes looked upon with dismay, though only by an inconsiderable few. But what an uproar arose when there was a boy born to them who did not have the fishlike form and silver tail that made the Mer who they were, but an objectionable human body.
His father would have nothing to do with him, and placed the blame for the boy’s deformities firmly upon his mother, who he had once seen making eyes at a mortal man, a lowly fisherman, around whose boat she had

Daniel de la Cruz’s journey to becoming an artist began during his childhood when he was fond of creating indistinguishable forms out of clay. A Filipino by birth and sensibility, his natural artistic skills were discovered during his freshman year at college and gained him a measure of fame. Nonetheless, having been raised by parents who were bent on educating their five children as professionals, Daniel was expected to study and practice medicine or law. Despite his reluctance, he tried his best to please them and pursued courses in both fields. These attempts did not turn out very well but Daniel still obtained a degree in Philosophy from the prestigious University of the Philippines in Upon graduation, and to the disappointment of his family, Daniel bravely decided to follow his heart and intuition and strike out on his own. Internationally, Daniel brought the Philippines honor and fame by winning the coveted Gold medal for the “Festival of Nativities” in Rome, Italy in December Daniel’s Nativity sculptures won the highest honor in a field of entries from 71 countries.

ABOUT
"Alab ng Puso" (Fire in the Heart) by sculptor Daniel de la Cruz is the BGC tribute to the Filipino soldier. It portrays the Filipino soldier, with his weapon set aside, reading a letter from his family.
Behind him is a steel panel with the shining words of "Lupang Hinirang.” On the steps are words that mean "love", "sacrifice", "freedom", "peace", and "hope" in Filipino and in a number of other Philippine languages.
In this sculpture, BGC recognizes the history of this area as the former home of our soldiers. We salute their sacrifices and offer them our gratitude.
