Francisco Pizarro was born in Castile (Spain) around and spent much of his childhood with his grandparents, where he likely helped to take care of the family’s pigs. In , his career in ocean travel began when he accompanied the new governor to the Caribbean island of Hispaniola (modern Haiti and Dominican Republic), which was a Spanish colony. He next joined an expedition under the command of Alonso de Ojeda to Colombia, and three years later, joined explorer Vasco Nunez de Balboa on the expedition credited with the European discovery of the Pacific Ocean.

This improbably and spectacular military victory led to Spanish control over a considerable part of South America radically changing the destiny of these countries. Pizzaro was ruthless, ambitious and cruel in his conquest of the Inca&#;s but was very influential in bringing European culture and religion to the former Inca Empire.

Pizarro was born an illegitimate child circa , in Trujillo, Spain — an area stricken by poverty. His father, Captain Gonzalo Pizarro, was a poor farmer. His mother, Francisca González, was of humble heritage. Pizarro grew up without learning how to read. Instead, he herded his father's pigs.

Francisco Pizarro was a Spanish explorer and one of the conquistadors who invaded the indigenous kingdoms of Latin America in the 16th century. He led the conquest of the Peruvian Empire. Pizarro had previously undertaken two expeditions to try to conquer the more powerful Incas, but both had failed. He was eventually killed by his own son, who had become estranged from his father following a quarrel Pizarro had had with his old comrade, Diego Almagro.
