Steve bender overgrown plants

Passalong Plants

February 7,
This book was a Christmas gift from my parents-- something I'd added to a wishlist because the description sounded promising. I don't often read non-fiction cover-to-cover, but this one was pleasantly readable. Particularly if you're a Southern gardener with a soft spot for old-fashioned, traditional, "hand-me-down" plants, this book is well worth a look. It's only within the past few years that I've gotten more seriously interested in gardening, and I'm in the process of building my garden from scratch, so the subject-- plants that have historically done very well in this part of the world-- holds a lot of personal interest for me.

The book was published in , and though (I think) the edition I have (paperback) was printed in the early s, it doesn't seem that the text has been updated from the original '93 version.  Difficult as it is to believe, it's been over 20 years since , and as I read, there were a few times when I wondered if the authors would change anything, given a chance at a rewrite.  One or two plants that they thought rare or underused in '93 strike me (in early ) as being fairly commonplace-- certainly not that unusual, based on

Episode Dealing With Daffodil Dilemmas

About This Episode

In this week’s episode of Ask Grumpy, Steve Bender, also known as Southern Living’s Grumpy Gardener, helps a reader handle a major daffodil dilemma. Plus, Grumpy’s plant of the week.

Question Of The Week

I've planted nearly daffodils during that past four years and only 10 have bloomed. Are voles eating the bulbs?

Grumpy Gardener: I guess my first question is are you planting them in soil? Now that's essential. You must plant them in soil. So if you haven't been doing that, check that one off this next fall.

Well, you're asking another question. Are voles eating the bulbs? Voles are like little rodent creatures that look a lot like moles but they eat plants instead of worms and stuff. But it's not voles because daffodil bulbs are toxic to all rodents. You won't get chipmunks eating them, and you won't get mice eating them. You won't get rabbits eating them. You won't get deer eating the flowers. So that's not it. I think probably it could be that you're just not buying the best quality daffodils. When you go out to a garden center or a home center, you want to buy the top quality bulb you can. The

When And How To Trim Boxwoods

Boxwoods are popular shrubs for landscaping in the Southern garden. They are slow growers, which means you don't need to prune often to keep them to a desirable size. But this also means you have to be patient when waiting for damaged areas to grow back. Pruned regularly just as the first flush emerges each spring, boxwoods only require a bit of trimming on occasion to maintain their shape. But what about when it’s been too long between prunings, the foliage is suffering, or the shrub needs some serious reshaping? How do you prune an overgrown boxwood, and when is the best time? Here’s what to know about when and how to prune boxwoods.

How To Grow And Care For Boxwoods

Spring Is Best For Trimming Boxwoods

Perhaps because they are slow growers, it can be easy to put off pruning a boxwood. The next thing you know, it’s in desperate need of cutting back. One faithful reader, Gail, asks, "What is the best way to cut back or prune two very large boxwoods that are on each side of our church entrance steps? They are at least 6 feet tall and 6 feet wide. They are very old and we don't want to get rid of them." Other readers also want to
