Georg simon ohm ( - ) was a physicist and mathematician of German origin who had a very relevant role in the development of physics, specifically in the area that has to do with electrodynamics. This branch included a law named after him (Ohm's law).
The torsion balance bears his name because it is used to measure electrostatic levels. It is also responsible for the acoustic impedance which is also known as Ohm's acoustic law.
The most important recognition Ohm received occurred ten years after his death. In a committee appointed by the British Scientific Association was held to define a standard unit of measurement that referred to resistance.
At that time the decision was made that the electrical unit of resistance be named as Ohmad, but in it was finally decided that the unit would simply be named ohm, in honor of the German scientist.
At the same time it was established that the symbol of resistance would be the letter omega, which is the last letter in the Greek alphabet. The reason for the choice, proposed by William Preece, is that the pronunciation of this letter is similar to
GEORG SIMON OHM.

[p] Georg Simon Ohm was born at Erlangen, in Bavaria, on the 16th of March (or August), He was the eldest son of a master locksmith, whose family had settled in the town at the end of the seventeenth century. The locksmith, though a poor man, was intelligent, and had some education. Ohm was the oldest son of Johann Wolfgang Ohm, master locksmith, and Maria Elisabeth Beck, daughter of a master tailor. Of the Protestant couple’s seven children, only two others survived childhood: Martin the mathematician and Elisabeth Barbara. The father, a self-sacrificing autodidact, gave his sons a solid education in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and the philosophies of Kant and Fichte; their considerable mathematical ability was recognized in by the Erlangen professor Karl Christian von Langsdorf, who enthusiastically likened them to the Bernoullis. Of considerably less importance than his father’s tutoring was Ohm’s attendance (–) at the Erlangen Gymnasium, where the predominantly classical instruction stressed recitation, translation, and interpretation of texts. On 3 May he matriculated at the University of Erlangen, where he studied for three semesters until his father’s displeasure at his supposed overindulgence in dancing, billiards, and ice skating forced him to withdraw in virtual exile to rural Switzerland.
