Als «Theologe der Säkularinstitute» trat Balthasar ein für eine der modernen Welt gegenüber «unverschanzte» Kirche (Schleifung der Bastionen, ) und wurde so zu einem stillen Wegbereiter des Zweiten Vatikanischen Konzils. Nicht zuletzt durch seine pointierte Polemik an nachkonziliaren Entwicklungen gewann Balthasar eine internationale Beachtung, etwa durch Wer ist ein Christ? () oder Cordula oder der ernste Fall ().
