Environment loses a friend in Maxwell

Howard Campbell, Gleaner Writer

Few persons in the history of modern Jamaica are as controversial as John Maxwell, the fiery, bushy-haired journalist and environmentalist who died last Friday at age

A hero to the generation of journalists who emerged during the politically hostile s, Maxwell was viewed as an enfant terrible by conservatives during that period when he openly supported the socialist policies of Prime Minister Michael Manley.

Maxwell's wife of 17 years, Marjan de Bruin, said he returned to Jamaica in late October from the Netherlands where he had received treatment for lung cancer. A lifelong smoker, he had been diagnosed with the disease in

"He had been pretty stable between August and October. The doctors thought he was doing well," de Bruin told The Gleaner yesterday. "He had difficulty walking but was happy to be home."

COMMON SENSE

There are two huge international conferences taking place this week: one, in New York is called the World Economic Forum and is attended by most of the richest and most powerful men in the world. There may, actually, be some women at this conference, but most of them are somebody's aide or spokesperson.

Half a world away, across the Equator in Porto Alegre, Brazil, another international meeting, The World Social Forum, is happening, attended probably by as many women as men, representing rich and poor people from all over the world.

The real title is "Building a coalition for a stable world".

One of the speakers at the WEF meeting was Mr Paul O'Neill, US secretary of the treasury who warned poor nations of the dangers of debt. He should know, since he is the former head of Alcoa which pleads that it can't do business in Jamaica unless we give up the bauxite levy, which was some recompense f
