A great-great granddaughter of Chinggis Khan, Qutulun’s father Qaidu (r. –) was the nemesis of Qubilai Qa’an (r. –94) and founder of the independent Mongol state in Central Asia. Allegedly excelling on the battlefield over all her father’s male generals, Qutulun demonstrates both the possibilities and the limitations of women’s military careers in the Mongol world.
