With American painter Robert Motherwell, Mattas work helped fuse European Surrealism and the American movement to be identified as Abstract Expressionism. Within his exemplary piece of Disasters of Mysticism, he ventures into uncharted territory alluding to the ever-changing universe of outer space. He achieves this utilizing brilliant flame-light to the left of the work and the black depths of space to the right (Arnason & Mansfield ).
Breton writes in the journal “Minotaure” the text Des tendences des plus récentes du surrealisme, in which which presents Matta as one of Surrealism's most promising new recruits:
“One of our youngest friends, Matta Echaurren, has as of today in his hands the reins of a production extraordinary painting. In him there is no longer anything rational nothing that does not result from the will to deepen the faculty of divination through color, a faculty that belongs to him in an exceptional. Returning to Paris, he lived for some time in La Roche-Guyon together with Pablo Neruda. Then on the advice of Marcel Duchamp, he embarks for New York on the same ship as Tanguy. Summary of Roberto Matta
Chilean-born artist Roberto Matta was an international figure whose worldview represented a synthesis of European, American, and Latin American cultures. As a member of the Surrealist movement and an early mentor to several Abstract Expressionists, Matta broke with both groups to pursue a highly personal artistic vision. His mature work blended abstraction, figuration, and multi-dimensional spaces into complex, cosmic landscapes. Matta's long and prolific career was defined by a strong social conscience and an intense exploration of his internal and external worlds.
Accomplishments

- Matta often supplemented an aesthetic of pure abstraction with elements of figuration and precisely rendered, though fantastically conceived, three-dimensional space.
