OCTAVIANO A. LARRAZOLO was born in Allende, Chihuahua, Mexico, on December 7, His education was attained at St. Michael’s College in New Mexico, where he studied theology for two years. He went on to study law, and in was admitted to the Texas bar. Larrazolo first entered politics as the district attorney for the Western District of Texas, a position he held from to After three unsuccessful bids for a seat in Congress, Larrazolo switched his political allegiance, joining the Republican Party in He next secured the Republican gubernatorial nomination, and was elected governor by popular vote on November 5, During his tenure, tax reform measures were sanctioned; a state board of health was established; and improvements were initiated that aided the state’s Latino population. After completing his term, Larrazolo served in the New Mexico House of Representatives, an office to which he won election in and He also served as a member of the U.S. Senate from to Governor Octaviano A. Larrazolo passed away on April 7, , and was buried in the Santa Barbara Cemetery in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Octaviano Ambrosio Larrazolo was born in Chihuahua, Mexico, on December 7, He was the son of Octaviano Larrazolo, a successful landowner, and Donaciana Corral. His grandfather was Jose Maria Larrazolo, an affluent businessman of the town. His mother, Donaciana Corral was a prominent, distinguished and educated lady from Parral, Mexico.

In , because of the French invasion in Mexico, the Larrazolo family lost their land, home and all their personal assets. They never recovered from this misfortune. Ten years later, the Catholic Bishop of Arizona, Reverend J. B. Salpointe, a longtime friend offered to facilitate the family financial hardship by taking young Octaviano Ambrosio, who had served under him as an altar boy, to the United States. In , Reverend Salpointe, who had become Archbishop of Santa Fe, New Mexico, enrolled Larrazolo in the Christian Brothers Preparatory Program also known as St. Michael's College. Upon the successful completion of his studies at St. Michael's of Santa Fe, Octaviano Ambrosio returned to Tucson, Arizona to teach. Upon taking his seat on December 7 of that year, he became the first Hispanic American to serve in the United States Senate. Larrazolo, who was born in Chihuahua, Mexico, on December 7, , was known as a gifted orator and a champion of civil rights. A former teacher and principal, he was devoted to achieving equality in education for Spanish-speaking Americans. At the New Mexico constitutional convention, Larrazolo was instrumental in securing the inclusion of a provision recognizing the Spanish language for use in conducting public business.
