Ansel Adams and the Age of Photography

A new method of photography is invented in France by Louise Jacques Mande Daguerre. The French government purchases the rights to the invention and makes it available to the public. Within months, clients are paying photographers to make daguerreotype portraits. Photographers are also sent on expeditions to make daguerreotypes in Russia, Egypt, and the Middle East.

A daguerreotype camera is taken along on an expedition led by John Fremont to chart the Western territories. Fremont is inexperienced with the process and obtains poor results.

John L. O'Sullivan coins the phrase, "Manifest Destiny," to justify America's Western expansion.

Early life

Ansel Easton Adams, the only child of Charles Hitchcock and Olive Bray Adams, was born on February 20, , in San Francisco, California, near the Golden Gate Bridge. In an aftershock from the famous earthquake of that year threw him to the floor and gave him a badly broken nose. His father, a successful businessman who owned an insurance agency and a chemical factory, sent him to private, as well as public, schools. Adams was shy and self-conscious about his nose and had problems in school. He received only an eighth-grade education, preferring to learn mainly through following his own interests. From a young age he enjoyed the outdoors, taking many long walks and exploring.

Ansel Easton Adams, photographer and environmentalist, was born on February 20, in San Francisco, California, the son of Charles Hitchcock Adams and Olive Bray.  An only child, Adams was born when his mother was nearly forty.  He was raised in an environment that was deeply Victorian, and Adams was a solitary child; at the age of twelve, he taught himself to play the piano and read music. Although he ultimately gave up music for photography, the piano brought substance, discipline, and structure to his frustrating and erratic youth.  Moreover, the careful training and exacting craft required of a musician, profoundly informed his visual artistry, as well as his influential writings and teachings on photography.

Always a lover of nature, Adams' life was, in his words, “colored and modulated by the great earth gesture” of the Yosemite Sierra; he spent substantial time there every year from until his death. There, he began using the Kodak No. 1 Box Brownie his parents had given him, joined the Sierra Club, and met his wife, Virginia Best; they were married in   The couple had two children.
