Sir William Russell Flint
Sir William Russell Flint was surely the greatest watercolour painter of the last century. In a lifetime spanning almost ninety years he fulfilled the role of devoted husband and father, medical illustrator, naval officer, etcher and painter. He enjoyed a dedicated following, was honoured and admired by his peers, and knighted by his monarch.
He was born in Edinburgh on the 4th April and was educated until the age of fourteen when he began a six-year apprenticeship as a lithographic draughtsman. Following completion of this apprenticeship he left for London to work as a medical illustrator. This lasted for eighteen months, after which he spurned regular employment and attended Hatherleys Art School for three days and evenings a week. At this time his main ambition lay in the field of book and story illustration and following an approach to the editor of The Illustrated London News he was commissioned to provide a series of illustrations for the Christmas week issue.

The professional work he produced as an artist over many years helped him to achieve the ability to create a unique style that became his forte. The paintings produced were looser and he was able to illustrate with superb professionalism, an array of depths that could give life to architecture and all manner of exotic material, not forgetting his models.
Russell Flint through the medium of his paintings has managed to give, and indeed still does immense enjoyment to thousands of people the world over.
The original watercolour paintings and limited edition signed prints, have now set the benchmark for artists and collectors worldwide, as a superlative excellence in the use of watercolour, and Sir William&#;s fine paintings are enjoyed by many and regarded amongst the most excellent works on paper to date.

The son of F. Wighton Flint, Sir William Russell Flint was born in in Edinburgh. He studied with a lithographer there but from he worked as an illustrator in London before he began to paint almost completely in watercolors. He became a member of the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours in , where he became president from – In he was elected a member of the Royal Academy.
Sir William Russell Flint is particularly renowned for the works he brought back from his trips to France and Italy. In and he started showing his work at group exhibitions, often at the Salon of the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He exhibited his work in London in and at the Royal Academy, as well as in Venice in and and in Berlin in In , he started working for the Riccardi Press in London where he provided watercolor designs for color illustrations of poems by M. Arnold.

William Russell Flint was born in Edinburgh. His father, Francis Wighton Flint, was an illustrator and his mother, Jane Russell Flint, was a civil servant. Flint's artistic talents were recognised early, and he attended the Royal Institution School of Art in Edinburgh, one of the precursors to the Edinburgh College of Art.
In , Flint moved to London to take up a position as a medical illustrator, and he rapidly expanded into illustrations for magazines and commercial designers. Flint joined the Illustrated London News in , which brought his artistic talents to the notice of a much wider audience. In Flint married Sibylle Sueter, who had been introduced to him as a potential model. He became a full time freelance artist in , and in moved with Sibylle to Rome.
