Thaddeus Sobieski Constantine Lowe

Thaddeus Sobieski Constantine Lowe was born August 20, in Jefferson Mills, New Hampshire.  Intellectually curious and driven from a young age, Lowe had almost no formal education but demonstrated an appetite for learning which hinted at his future career as an inventor.  At the age of 18 he attended a lecture on the subject of lighter-than-air gases and so impressed the professor, Reginald Dinkelhoff, with his enthusiasm that Dinkelhoff offered to take the young Lowe on the lecture circuit with him as an assistant.  Over the course of the next decade, Lowe devoted himself to balloon aviation, and became a prominent builder of balloons and showman.  In , at one of his demonstrations, he met the Parisian actress Leontine Augustine Gaschon, and they were wed just one week later.  The couple eventually had ten children.  In the latter part of the decade he set about building bigger balloons, with an eye towards a transatlantic crossing, and began to garner a prominent scientific reputation.  In April, , Lowe intended to make a test run from Cincinnati, Ohio to Washington, D.C.  He took off on April 19, just

By the time Professor Thaddeus Sobieski Constantine Lowe arrived in Pasadena in , he had already achieved great success producing light-weight gasses for commercial use. In addition, he was recognized for flying reconnaissance balloons for President Lincoln during the Civil War. With substantial wealth and a respectable reputation in the sciences, Lowe was on the brink of making history that would make his name a household word but cost him his fortune.

Lowe was born Aug. 20, in Jefferson Mills, a small village in northern New Hampshire, to a family of modest means. His father was the town cobbler and local grocery clerk. Although Thad worked to help his financially strapped family, he did well in school, showing a particular interest in botany, chemistry and geology.  At 15, he left for Boston to assume a cobbler apprenticeship, but still continued studying on his own.  By the time he was 18, Lowe was touring the country with an alchemist, demonstrating how gasses could raise large balloons into the air.  It was probably at this time that he first received the honorary title of “Professor,” it being commonly awarded to – or adopted by – patent medicine carnival barkers, lec

Thaddeus S.C. Lowe was a brilliant inventor. Even the items on a list of his &#;major&#; accomplishments would seem to belong to several men and lifetimes, instead of his one.  Thaddeus Lowe&#;s birth and upbringing were not extraordinary.  If anything, his youth was full of difficulty and disappointments. Through his own effort, he earned money to obtain an education, and then continued to be both student and teacher, for the rest of his life.

During his 81 years of life, he:

Balloonist for Union Army

Conducted military reconnaissance for
Union forces during Civil War

Thaddeus Lowe developed and supervised a fleet of manned balloons that provided valuable information to Union forces on enemy troop positions and movements. Lowe's balloons thus became the first aviation aircraft used in American military history. The U.S. government never really appreciated the value of Lowe's Balloon Corps, however. By mid, administrative errors and general lack of support brought Lowe's balloon operations to an end.

Difficult childhood fosters independent spirit

Thaddeus Soieski Constantine Lowe was born in Coos County, New Hampshire, on August 20, , to a family whose ancestors had fought in the Revolutionary War (–83). His parents, Clovis and Alpha Lowe, had four other children in addition to Thaddeus. By the time he was ten years old they decided that they could no longer provide for all of them. They arranged to hire Thaddeus out to a neighboring farmer who agreed to provide him with food, shelter, and adult guidance in exchange for work. Saddened at
