Henry Arthur Callis (–)

Henry Arthur Callis was one of the Seven Jewels or founders of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. He was born on January 14, , in Rochester, New York, to the Rev. Henry Callis and Helen Josephine (Sprague) Callis and was one of five children.

As a result of an elevator accident that killed his mother, Henry Arthur Callis, age 3, spent his formative years under the care of his maternal grandparents in Binghampton, New York. Callis graduated in from high school and left Binghampton to attend Cornell University in upstate New York, a university he first visited when he was 6. He earned a partial scholarship and worked as a tutor and waiter for white fraternity houses on campus. He was forced to drop out due to financial struggles the same year, but he did not give up; he saved his money and reentered in the fall of

During that semester, a group of African American students in a literary society, in which Callis was a member, decided to form a fraternal organization. On December 4, , seven of the society members, Callis included, transitioned it into a fraternal organization named Alpha Phi Alpha. Callis was credited with the fraternity’s name and initial ritual

The seven visionary founders, known as the “Jewels” of the fraternity, are Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and Vertner Woodson Tandy.

 

HENRY ARTHUR CALLIS

Callis became a practicing physician, Howard University Professor of Medicine and prolific contributor to medical journals. Often regarded as the “philosopher of the founders” and a moving force in the Fraternity’s development, he was the only one of the “Cornell Seven” to become general president. Prior to moving to Washington, D.C., he was a medical consultant to the Veterans Hospital in Tuskegee, Alabama. Upon his death in , at age 87, the fraternity entered a time without any living Jewels. His papers were donated to Howard’s Moorland-Spingarn Research Center.

 

Chapman entered higher education and eventually became Professor of Agriculture at what is now Florida A&M University. Callis was born in Rochester, New York and attended Cornell University and Rush Medical College.

Career

Callis co-authored the fraternity name with Eugene Jones and became the only Jewel to become General President of the fraternity. Callis assisted in the organization of several chapters, including Theta Chapter () in Chicago and later, Xi Lambda Chapter (), also in Chicago. He became a physician and worked as a medical consultant at the Veterans&#; Hospital in Tuskegee, Alabama.

He was Professor of Medicine at Howard University and a frequent contributor to medical journals.

The Eta Tau Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha created Alpha Phi Alpha Homes Incorporated. to address housing for low-income families, individuals and senior citizens in Akron, Ohio. In , Alpha Homes received an $ million grant from Housing and Urban Development to begin groundbreaking on Channelwood Village with the Henry Arthur Callis Tower as its centerpiece.
