A number of years ago, someone told me I needed to know Jane Fulton Alt. It was some of the best advice I&#;ve received in the photo world, and I am thrilled to share the work and the new monograph of a friend I so deeply admire. Jane has that rare ability to consider many subjects and ways of working with finesse and insight, exploring universal issues of humanity and the non – material. She also manages to balance her art making with family, a career as a social worker, numerous charities, and time in her beloved adopted city of New Orleans. Jane opened an exhibition at the Griffin Museum&#;s Atelier Gallery on October 3rd while will run through December 8th, Jane will be giving an artist lecture on October 10th at pm.
Jane was born in Chicago has been active in the arts much of her lifetime, as an image maker and mentor. Jane attended the University of Michigan and the University of Chicago and has studied art and photography at the Evanston Art Center, Columbia College and the Art Institute of Chicago. 세상은 공평하지 않습니다. 세상은 절대로 공평하지 않지만 딱 두가지는 공평합니다. 그 하나는 시간입니다. 빌 게이츠나 나에게 주어진 시간의 물리적 길이는 공평합니다. 그리고 또 하나가 죽음입니다.
아무리 돈이 많고 명예가 높고 유명하다고 해서 오래 살지는 못합니다. 죽음 앞에서 우리 인간은 누구나 공평합니다
스티브 잡스가 세상을 떠났습니다. 누가 말했는지는 잘 기억나지 않지만 '가장 위대한 창조는 죽음'이라는 말이 너무 공감이 가네요.
죽음이 없었다면 창조물도 없고 혁신도 변화도 없었을것입니다.
죽음을 많은 사람들이 두려워 합니다. 그 두려움은 죽음 이후의 삶에 대한 두려움이 아닐까요? 죽음이후의 삶이 있는지 없는지도 모르는 인간. 그런 무지에서 오는 공포가 두려움의 원천이 아닐까요?
삶과 죽음은 동전의 양면과 같습니다. 죽음이 있기에 삶이 있는것이고 삶이 있기에 죽음이 존재하는 것이죠. 하나의 죽음은하나의 생명을 잉태합니다. 가을에 죽은 낙엽들이 새로운 생명의 자양분이 되어서 생명체를 키워냅니다. 이런 순환과정을 통해서 우리가 현재 살고 있고 언젠가는 죽음으로써 다른 삶에 영향을 줍니다. 어떻게 보면 육신만 죽었지 죽지 않는 불사신도 사실 많습니다. 수 많은 영화나 책, 음악등 아직까지도 우리에게 영향을 주는 죽은자들이 만든 자양분을 현재의 삶들이 마시는 것은 아닐까요?
사진작가 Jane Fulton Alt 은 The Burn 씨리즈를 찍었습니다. 잡풀들을 제거 하기 위해 초원에 불을 붙이는 모습들을 카메라에 담았습니다. 죽음면서 내는 향기가 가득한 초원을 보면서 그녀는 4년전 난소암 판정을 받은 여동생 생각을 했습니다.
암을 죽이기위해 화학요법을 쓰는 것 처럼 필요 없는 잡풀을 죽이기 위해 초원에 불을 지르는 모습이 비슷하다고 느꼈습니다
불로 화학요법으로 사라지는 풀과 암이 쓰러진 자리에 새로운 생명이 자랄 것 입니다.

Please tell us about yourself?
I started in the arts about twenty years ago, having always been interested in making things with my hands. I live in the Midwest, have raised a family, done extensive traveling, and am a clinical social worker in addition to being a photographer.
Can you tell us about the making of your artist book?
The artist book came out of a need to raise money for the &#;trade&#; book, The Burn. I collaborated with a book and paper artist in Chicago, Teresa Pankratz. When I approached Teresa about creating a book, neither of us has any idea of the scope of the project, as neither of us had ever collaborated with another artist before. We met weekly to discuss the form the book might take. What we came up with was beyond my wildest dreams. Teresa had seen my exhibit in the Chicago area and wanted to include one of the encaustic pieces in the book, thinking of it as embedding a jewel in a book.

The huge installation Palmsonntag (Palm Sunday), refers to the Christian holy day and suggests the balance between death and resurrection, decay and recreation so characteristic of Kiefer&#;s work. He brings the outside in with his materials of mud, sunflowers, roses and other organic materials. One has the sense of a Jackson Pollock painting with the energy that is conveyed in its creation.
