The family didn't have much money because his father was ill. His mother was a cook at the college, and Lou waited on tables to help pay his way.
He started playing for the New York Yankees in His parents scraped together $14 for him to make the trip to spring training camp in New Orleans. When he got there, he started looking for a job, but the team paid him some money in advance. (They usually paid the players at the end of the training camp.) He was able to concentrate on practicing and improving his skills.
He improved so much that two different times, he was named American League Most Valuable player. He was called the
"Iron Horse".
He played in every game for 14 years without missing even one. He played over games. That was a record which wasn't broken for 50 years.

Lou Gehrig was born Heinrick Ludwig Gehrig but went by Lou.
He grew up in Yorkville, Manhattan, with German Immigrant parents. At an early age, he developed a love for baseball and thrived in it with his natural athletic ability.
He would grow up to become part of the famed murderers' row with Babe Ruth, but Gehrig came from humble beginnings before becoming a national celebrity.
His father was not an ideal role model, as he dealt with drinking issues most of his life. Instead, his mother was the person in the household to worked hard and provide for Lou.
Lou's mother wanted him to focus on school, which he did and did well, but as he grew older, he gravitated towards baseball. He played sports in High school and was exceptional in Baseball and Football.
John McGraw recruited him to try out for the New York Giants, but he did not make the team. He spent some time with the Hartford Senators, but when he realized that playing for money would jeopardize his scholarship, he returned to Columbia College to finish his education.
Despite his busy schedule, he always held down a job to help support his mother. This

Of all the players in baseball history, none possessed as much talent and humility as Lou Gehrig. His accomplishments on the field made him an authentic American hero, and his tragic early death made him a legend.
Gehrig’s later glory came from humble beginnings. He was born on June 19, in New York City. The son of German immigrants, Gehrig was the only one of four children to survive. His mother, Christina, worked tirelessly, cooking, cleaning houses, and taking in laundry to make ends meet. His father, Heinrich, often had trouble finding work and had poor health.
From Columbia to Yankee Stadium
Christina was adamant that Gehrig receive a good education so, in , he went to Columbia on a football scholarship to pursue a degree in engineering. Before his first semester began, New York Giants manager John McGraw advised him to play summer professional baseball under an assumed name, Henry Lewis. “Everyone does it,” McGraw explained, even though the illegal ball playing could have jeopardized Gehrig’s collegiate sports career.
