In Memory of, Dr. Greg L. Bahnsen. Twenty Years Ago Today.
Twenty years ago today the doctors told us in an official way what we had known for four or five days – my dad was gone. The day was a blur. Frankly, a whole lot of the last twenty years has been a blur. My dad was very sick. He had fought a heart condition for just shy of twenty years. He had become diabetic. He had high blood pressure. He was emotionally heartbroken. And a third open-heart surgery was more than his body could bear. God wanted him up there. And that’s where he went.
I miss my dad every single day but for very different reasons than most who know his name miss him. He has “fans”, and that is because he was a brilliant scholar, apologist, and intellectual. I missed him as a public intellectual during the popular atheism craze of a decade ago when I was stunned at the deficiency of those “filling in” as the “theist du jour”. Let’s just say I wish our team had had its star player. But no matter how valuable his sermons or contributions to Christian thought were, what I miss is my dad, who was my advocate, who I have never come close to replacing that void in my life since he left. September 17 Today in OPC History
On September 17, , Greg Lyle Bahnsen was born in Auburn, Washington. The Bahnsens soon relocated to southern California, where Greg grew up. A lifelong member of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church, Greg matured in a distinctively Reformed atmosphere. He was blessed with an extraordinary intellect and a frail body, suffering from numerous and serious medical problems during his forty seven years of life.
During high school Greg began reading and digesting the works of Dr. Cornelius Van Til. Sensing a call to the ministry, he came under the care of the Presbytery of Southern California at age In , Bahnsen enrolled at Westminster Theological Seminary where he studied under Van Til. Three years later Bahnsen graduated from Westminster with a Master of Divinity degree and a Master of Theology degree, earned simultaneously. Moreover, he won the William Benton Greene prize in Apologetics during his time at WTS.
The late 70’s were an active time for Bahnsen. He was ordained to the gospel ministry in , began teaching at Reformed Theological Seminary in , published his controversial book Theonomy in Christian Ethics in and completed

He received his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Southern California, specializing in the theory of knowledge. He previously received the B.A. (magna cum laude, philosophy) from Westmont College, and then simultaneously earned the and Th.M. degrees from Westminster Theological Seminary. Dr. Bahnsen lectured to a broad range of evangelical Christian groups at many colleges and conferences. He was an experienced apologist and debater, a clear and cogent teacher of the Christian worldview who was devoted to training believers in understanding and applying the Christian faith to every area of life. He published numerous scholarly articles, a number of well-known books, and has over 1, recorded lectures and sermons.

Greg L. Bahnsen (September 17, – December 11, ) was an American Reformed philosopher, apologist, and debater. He was a minister in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church and a full-time Scholar in Residence for the Southern California Center for Christian Studies (SCCCS). He is also considered a contributor to the field of Christian apologetics, as he popularized the presuppositional method of Cornelius Van Til.
n Bahnsen graduated magna cum laude from Westmont College, receiving his B.A. in philosophy as well as the John Bunyan Smith Award for his overall grade point average. From there he went on to Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, where he studied under Cornelius Van Til. The two became close friends. When he graduated in May , he simultaneously received two degrees, Master of Divinity and Master of Theology, as well as the William Benton Greene Prize in apologetics and a Richard Weaver Fellowship from the Intercollegiate Studies Institute. His next academic stop was the University of Southern California (USC), where he studied philosophy, specializing in the theory of knowledge.
