Thrive Global: What’s the first thing you do when you get out of bed?
Samer Hamadeh: I jot down the ideas that came to me overnight — often solutions to knotty work issues I’ve been thinking through. Then I check my email, brush my teeth, kiss my wife and kids, and grab a cup of coffee.
TG: What gives you energy?
SH: I make time to work out whenever I can — and get a massage as often as possible.
TG: What’s your secret life hack?
SH: I always try to take the stairs.
TG: Name a book that changed your life.
SH: The Sherlock Holmes series of short stories and novels. I discovered Doyle’s work right after I graduated from Stanford. I was fascinated by the way Sherlock Holmes thought — intuitive, logical, outside the box. Like Holmes, CEOs are called upon to solve seemingly intractable puzzles.

The basics
Do I have to have a board of directors?
Yes. Every company is required by law to have a board of directors. The board doesn’t need to be elaborate, or even more than one person, but every company must have a board in place.
When do I need to start a board?
A board must be put in place when you start a company. Interestingly, it is ok for the company to have only one board member, and it may be you. You must have a board to handle corporate matters like issuing stock, setting up a stock option plan, authorizing a fundraising or getting loans. In most startups, the founder will typically appoint himself or herself to the board. F

Faced with a second sprained rotator cuff, entrepreneur Samer Hamadeh wasn't looking forward to traditional options to fight the pain.
"The doctor tells you to take a bunch of painkillers or to have a cortisone shot, or to go ahead and do surgery," says Hamadeh, 43, of New York. "I'm not a big fan of surgery, so I said, 'What else can I do?'"
